Strengthening Food Security: Kisii County Committee on Agriculture Sensitized on the Kisii County Food and Nutrition Security Bill, 2025
The Kisii County Assembly Committee on Agriculture convened on October 3, 2025, for a sensitization workshop on the County Food and Nutrition Security (CFNS) Draft Bill, held at Nyakoe Hotel. The session was organized with support from KEPHRA.
The workshop brought together key stakeholders from the county’s agriculture and legal sectors to review and discuss the proposed Bill, which seeks to provide a legal and policy framework for ensuring sustainable food and nutrition security across Kisii County.
Chief Officer for Fisheries, Livestock, and Veterinary Services, Ms. Agnes Choti, officially opened the session. In her remarks, she underscored the importance of developing a strong legislative foundation that not only promotes agricultural productivity but also ensures that every household in Kisii has access to safe and nutritious food. She noted that the county is committed to aligning its policies with national strategies to strengthen resilience against food insecurity.
The Chair of the County Assembly Agriculture Committee, Hon. Ibrahim Machiki, led the committee members through the day’s deliberations, closely following presentations and contributing to discussions on the Bill’s potential impact on local farmers and food systems.
Advocate Mark Magugu from the Kisii County Attorney’s Office facilitated an in-depth review of the Draft Bill. He highlighted its guiding principles, including food sovereignty, sustainability, and collaboration between government and community actors. Members of the committee engaged actively, raising practical considerations for implementation and proposing areas for refinement before the Bill is tabled in the Assembly.
The workshop offered an important platform for knowledge sharing and consensus building among policymakers. By strengthening the understanding of the Bill’s intent and implications, it laid the groundwork for informed debate and policy adoption.
The County Food and Nutrition Security Bill, 2025, once enacted, is expected to enhance coordination in agricultural planning, improve nutrition outcomes, and ensure that food security remains a top priority in Kisii’s development agenda.
This sensitization workshop marks another milestone in Kisii County’s journey toward building a resilient, food-secure future for its citizens.
